In its fully bilingual English-French edition, the book LIFTING THE CURTAIN / LEVER DE RIDEAU (Éditions Fourre-Tout, Belgium, 2018) illustrates through a careful selection of texts the details of reality and the complexity of the worlds of architecture and urbanism in that part of Europe that was under Soviet control. It points to the unexpected plurality of architectural work behind the monolithic facade of the former Eastern bloc, analyses over several chapters certain terminology (research, institutions, media, etc.), examines projects, group organisations, the circulation of actors and models of national cultural scenes, exchanges and confrontations, debates and research, and alternative media of the architectural culture of that time. Maria Topolčanská’s text Research in Our Time / La Recherche d’aujourd’hui asks what we can and can’t ask of the questions we pose certain architects working during the period of normalisation in Czechoslovakia in the research we are conducting at present into cities and contemporary architecture. The text places within context the conditions and motivations that feed into theoretical research into architecture at today’s architecture schools and on the Czech and Slovak art scenes, and ends optimistically with a list of research topics that need attending to right now (a To-Do list).
