The symposium focuses on multidisciplinary research into music as a tool for therapy, spirituality, and healing. The conference reflects the fact that since prehistoric times, music has been associated with magic, prayer, shamanic practices, and spirit invocations, while its perception as a purely artistic work is a relatively recent phenomenon in Euro-American culture over the last few centuries. The symposium maps the rich traditions of therapeutic use of music across world cultures – from ancient Greece through African-American cults to the healing trans rituals of Zār in Ethiopia and Gnawa in Morocco. Attention is paid to the current development of music therapy, which has made significant progress in recent decades both at the institutional level and in the form of individual sessions using new methods involving various musical instruments and vocal techniques. A significant part of the symposium is devoted to examining the evolution of sacred music in the context of globalization, where traditional forms are transferred to new environments and change their structure and effect. Examples include the Western adaptation of overtone singing from Central Asia and the globalized singing of Indian mantras accompanied by guitar. The conference emphasizes a scientific approach to the issue, dealing with neuroscientific theories of the therapeutic effects of music, the role of music in spiritual traditions, and new musical-spiritual phenomena of the present day. The symposium asks questions about the mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of music and the importance of choosing specific instruments or vocal techniques.
