The chapter analyzes images sent to outer space (e.g. Pioneer plaques from 1972 and 1973, Golden Records carried by Voyagers 1 and 2 launched in 1977 or the artist Trevor Paglen’s project “The Last Pictures” from 2012. The chapter takes this extreme form of image travel as an opportunity to ask questions about cross-cultural and interspecies communication and the specific role that technical images (especially photographs and diagrams) play in it. These time capsules and their trajectories call for a radical reconsideration of our media and image theories.
