Jahrhunderts entwickelten.

Care for orphans and the establishment of orphanages in Bohemia from the 16th Century to around 1800 an overview
Popis výsledku anglicky
In early modern Bohemia, the open care of orphaned children by foster parents clearly prevailed over placement in closed institutions. Since poverty posed an existential threat to abandoned children, they had to be provided with social support, while institutions were regarded as a last and costly resort and also as inadequate preparation for life. Accordingly, orphanages were rare in the 18th and early 19th centuries: until 1848, there were only a few specialized institutions in Prague. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that their number increased significantly, above all through initiatives by cities and associations. While private foundations remained the exception because of a lack of capital, the state increasingly took over financing. Overall, it can be stated that viable foundations for the institutional care and education of orphaned children developed only toward the end of the 18th century and during the 19th century.
