During the research process, researchers are often forced to rely on gatekeepers as mediators who help them to make contact with a target population. The paper explores the circumstances under which institutional gatekeepers deny research access to research participants and how researchers respond to this situation. We used qualitative research, in particular semi-structured in-depth interviews with researchers, to explore the situations in which gatekeepers denied access and identify the strategies that researchers employed in the research process. Three main practices in the case of gatekeeper refusal were identified; these are conducting research despite denial, changes in methodology, and covert research.
