El integrante de la generación (espa?ola) del 98, Rafael Barrett, eligió como su segunda partia al Paraguay, donde destacó como miembro de la generación de 1900, siendo al mismo tiempo fundador de una narrativa de tipo crítico en este país. Después de laderrota de la Guerra de la Triple Alianza (1864-1870), dominaba en la literatura del Paraguay la corriente historicista que exaltaba el pasado glorioso y los acontecimientos bélicos de los héroes. Barrett, sin embargo, propone otra perspectiva, denunciando en Lo que son los yerbales los abusos y el trato esclavista en las plantaciones de yerba mate en el Paraguay oriental. Augusto Roa Bastos se consideraba deudor de este escritor ?anarquista? espa?ol y le dedicó una parte de su novela Hijo de hombre (1960). Él es tambien el cantor del ?dolor paraguayo?.

Rafael Barrett, member of the Spanish Generation of 98, chose Paraguay as his second Fatherland. He was there an outstanding writer of the Paraguayan Generation of 1900, creating at the same time a new type of critical narrative in that country. After the Paraguayan defeat in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), a kind of historicism dominated in the literature of that country, which extolled the glorious past, the military events and the heroes. Nevertheless, Barrett proposes other perspective,denouncing in What the Paraguayan Yerba Fields are, the abuses and the mistreatment, close to slavery, in the plantations of yerba mate in the Oriental part of Paraguay. Augusto Roa Bastos considered himself to be indebted to this writer, an anarquista espanol?, and he devoted to him a part of his novel Son of the Man (1960). He is also the singer of the ?Paraguayan pain?.
