Der Autor analysiert die Probleme und Perspektiven der Forschung von Bergbau und Umwelt in Mitteleuropa. Im Fokus stehen die frühneuzeitlichen Bergbaureviere, die mit den gemeinsamen Energiekrisen und Problemen wie die Holznot, die Frage der Wassernutzung, die unkontrollierten Schadstoffemissionen der Hüttenwerke kämpften, wobei die Zugangsweisen bei der Überwindung dieser Schwierigkeiten unterschiedliche Formen hatten.
