The Private Prayers of John of Jenstein
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The third archbishop of Prague, John of Jenstein (d. 1400), is famous primarily for his conflicts with King Wenceslas IV, which led to the death of John of Pomuk (later canonized as St. John of Nepomuk). It is much less known that Jenstein was a prolific and gifted author who reflected in his extensive literary work the pressing problems of his time, the essential questions of human existence, and deep personal piety. The book is dedicated to this dimension of Jenstein’s work. It presents the first ever critical edition and Czech translation of a complete collection of archbishop’s private prayers (Oraciones). The (Czech and English) introduction situates Oraciones within the context of Jenstein’s life and assesses the extent to which his literary legacy has been made available until now. The collection includes eighteen prose and verse prayers that bear unique witness to Jenstein’s intimate spiritual life, his fears and hopes.
