Nach dem Scheitern der Märzrevolution 1848 kam es zu dramatischen Veränderungen in den vorherrschenden Weltanschauungen, Gesellschaft und in der Politik. Auch die Literatur der Zeit war von bestimmten Besonderheiten geprägt. Unter anderem ließ sich die literarische Strömung des Realismus verorten. Die Schriftsteller greifen Themen aus dem Alltagsleben der Mittelschicht auf. Auch die Novelle spielte im Realismus eine große Rolle. Zentrales Element der Novelle Rings ist ein Moment der Krise, der die Hauptfigur, die Malerin Angelika Kauffmann widerfährt und dieser Augenblick einen Wendepunkt in ihrem Leben darstellt.

After the failure of the March Revolution in 1848, drastic changes occurred in prevailing worldviews, society and politics. The literature of the time was also characterized by certain specific features. Among other things, the literary movement of realism could be located. The writers focus on topics from the everyday life of the middle class. The novella also played a major role in realism. The writer Max Ring dedicates himself to novelistic literary work. He published the novella ,Angelika‘ in his collection ,Loose Birds‘. The central element of the novella is a moment of crisis that happens to the main character, the experienced classicist painter Angelika Kauffmann, and represents a turning point in her life.
