aCentral European cities carry an exceptionally large burden of underused and brownfield land. Often in central and accessible locations, this land represents a "hole"in the urban fabric, with significant losses in economic efficiencies, social cohesion,and quality of life. At the same time, new development that could be located on recycled brownfield land is contributing to sprawling conversion of agricultural land on urban fringes.The comparative study of the postindustrial cities of the Visegrad Four countries, worked out in the last year in cooperation with universities of those cities, drew attention to the brownfield issues. By comparing experiences from abroad, especially the regeneration priorities in terms of the environment and sustainable development are underestimated. The main barrier identified was the lack of stakeholders' know-how and education. The public and even the private sector and its technical side at all levels lacks the necessary awareness of and knowledge ab
