Transformation of Urban Mobility in the Context of Sustainable Development: Application of Experiences from Ostrava

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This paper focuses in detail on the concept of sustainable urban mobility, emphasising the practical application of principles derived from experiences in Ostrava. The aim is to take advantage of local knowledge and the specifics of Ostrava, while also integrating general trends from European metropolises into the concept of cycling transport, with an emphasis on the streets as archetypal spaces in urban development. Historically, the street was a fundamental urban unit, but was neglected during the era of functionalism. Transport engineers took over, but now it is regaining importance under the influence of urbanists like Jacobs and Lynch, in line with UN principles. The concept of cycling transport defines conditions for developing cycling transport throughout the city, highlighting the importance of connectivity, directness, safety, comfort, and attractiveness. Ostrava serves as a specific example where the approach to planning and building cycling infrastructure is changing. Instead of the traditional method of building infrastructure along predefined routes, a comprehensive network is being created, promoting safe cycling movement and increasing their competitiveness compared to other modes of transport within the city. The principles of connectivity, directness, safety, comfort, and attractiveness are key to the success of sustainable urban mobility. Regional connections, urban avenues, and significant streets, along with traffic-calmed zones, are identified as crucial elements that can contribute to an integrated and sustainable urban mobility system. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
