OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT OF NANOMATERIALS: LESSONS LEARNED FROM CZECH CASE STUDIES
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Nanotechnology is one of dynamically developing technologies that significantly changes and influences the economy direction as well as many aspects of everyday life. It is one of the key technological drivers in building an innovation based on smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Nevertheless, the benefits brought by engineered nanomaterials (ENM) and nanotechnologies are creating also some concerns about their possible effects on human health and the environment. There are still significant knowledge gaps regarding ENM and their HSE features. The research in nanosafety has become one of the leading domains within the EU framework programmes for research and innovation. Exposure assessment and life cycle analysis as well as tools for predictive risk assessment and management including databases and ontologies are among the priorities of nanosafety research. Case studies have been conducted in the Czech Republic to address some data gaps in occupational exposure assessment of ENM. The objectives of the studies were as follows: to identify possible pathways of ENM release into the environment; to characterize occupational exposure to ENM based on topical measurement strategies; to complete a set of occupational exposure scenarios for ENM; to perform preliminary exposure/risk assessment using the CB tools. Occupational exposure was measured in selected enterprises. Current approaches for exposure measurement and assessment was not possible to fulfil completely due to specific problems, e.g. short duration of work tasks, high background aerosol concentration etc. The interesting sociological feature has been observed during the measurement campaign. Despite most of the CEOs are concerned with occupational health and safety related to ENMs, they are not willing to make the results available. Application of CB tools on selected occupational exposure scenarios shows overestimation of exposure, which could further lead to excessive precaution.
