The flood which covered the Czech Republic in the year 1997 could be classified as a natural disaster. Its extraordinary character and extent of damages overpassed all the available information from past. So huge natural disaster verified the quality andlegitimacy of standards, functioning all the state bodies and authorities, first of all also the activity of the Integrated rescue system and last but not least the possibilities and work of insurance offices. The author participated in the project for adirective for buildings in the flooded areas. The paper informs on the main principles of this directive.
