The wood in many historic buildings is used especially as structural material. Its good mechanical and physical properties became a reason for its use above all in the past. The lifetime of wood structures can last even some centuries. But on the other hand there are some cases when its lifetime is very small because of its unsuitable application or unsuitable environment. The wood and wood-based materials can be very often affected by biological corrosion. But the heaviest degradation factor is a fire.
