Desulphurisation of fuel is a problem, despite considerable effort, the world has so far failed to manage the discharge of SO2 to the atmosphere. The high content of sulphur in coal is bad for its utilisation, and for the environment. During the direct combustion of coal with a high content of sulphur, SO2 escapes to the atmosphere, polluting the living environment and causing acid rain.
