The present article deals with the decline of mining activities in the area with the highest incidence of brown coal in the Czech Republic - Northwest Bohemia. It analyses causes and consequences of these activities and outlines a perspective for futuremining operations. The very process of decline in mining would not be possible without the participation of the state which was absolutely essential for its implementation. It was not just a legislative endorsement of the entire process, but specially its funding.
