In Mine Plant 2 in the Czech Republic, a partial extraction of a shaft pillar is being prepared using the room and pillar method so that the surface and the shaft are negligibly affected. Due to the fact that this shaft pillar is significantly extra loaded because of numerous surrounding stopes, it is necessary to deal with the issue of mining rockbursts as well. This paper is concerned with the issue of the prognosis of mining rockbursts. When tackling this issue, the possibility of using the methods of the prognosis of rockbursts, which have been applied in the only method of mining used so far, i.e. in longwalling, is evaluated first. This analysis has shown that none of the major methods of tremor prognosis used in longwalling can be applied in theroom and pillar method. It is proposed for the prognosis of rockbursts in the room and pillar method to monitor the values of Energy Release Rate (ERR).
