OPTIONS OF PREVENTING WILDLIFE COLLISION ON ROADS ON THE EXAMPLE OF MORAVIAN-SILESIAN REGION (CZECH REPUBLIC)

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Communication and transportation represent today one of the most serious anthropogenic interference with the nature and the landscape in general. Construction and expansion of transport infrastructure are indeed logical conditions of development, but also bring an increase in numbers of dead animals on roads and highways. Roads and highways pose to animals a hardly surmountable obstacle, and their mortality is also influenced by such factors like gradual occupation of farmland by other uses. In the Czech Republic there is 54% of the total area of the country used to grow crops that attract wildlife in times of food scarcity. The occurrence of collisions was evaluated particularly in terms of effect of landscape elements, surrounding crops and habitat conditions in a given area. On the basis of this assessment new proposals were designed, which would lead to reduction in wildlife mortality. Proposals are thematically categorized starting from practical measures and concluding at a general account of the possible innovative approaches in this area, which in itself necessarily combines the influences of nature conservation and the effect of human activities. Case study, which is based on data from two theses and a long-term work of both participating institutions. The case study focuses on measures that may be in accordance with national legislation and guidelines of the European Community, implemented in the protected landscape areas Beskydy and Poodri.
