LIFE SATISFACTION IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY IN COACHING

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Life satisfaction and related work-life balance is often discussed in connection with working professionals, but it concerns everybody, including students. We attempted to identify what the key factors that influence life satisfaction in university students are and how these may influence their work-life balance. The case study included four selected sets of respondents from among university students of all ages, both in full and part-time study programmes of School of Business Administration in Karvina, Silesian University, Czech Republic. The method applied was a coaching tool called life balance wheel or Wheel of Life, using which the students were asked to prioritise the key life satisfaction factors, such as health, work, money, family, housing, relationships, education and fun. The results show that the three key factors influencing the life satisfaction in students were money, family and housing. Naturally, the results in the four sets differed due to various reasons. It was interesting to cluster the key life satisfaction factors according to forms of study (full or part-time students) and study programmes (Bachelor or Master), and measure the distances between the different factors. According to the form of study, the students agreed on health and relationships as the most important life satisfaction factors, whereas it was money that was the most important factor when clustering the students according to their study programme. The research was carried out when teaching two courses, namely Work Counselling and Career Counselling, and diverse coaching tools were used to help the students identify their key life satisfaction factors and think about the concept of work-life balance that much impacts the life satisfaction itself.
