The results of experiments are aimed at the development of a modified alloy structure during hot deformation. Deformation behaviour of the AZ61 alloy after T4 and subsequent cooling by different manners (water, air) after termination of forging, was observed at the forging temperature of 380°C. After evaluation of influence of forging on final microstructure a distinct reduction of the size of final grain was evident in comparison with the original grain size, both in case of cooling of the alloy in water and on air. Comparisons of X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples cooled after forging on air with the samples cooled after forging in water showed that recrystallisation runs in most cases much quicker in the samples cooled after forging on air. As a result of it, there were mosaic blocks growing from the structure disintegrated by forging during the cooling of the forged samples on air. Although these blocks were smaller than 10 ?m, they, however, provided a more perfect structur
