It is increasingly recognized that fundamental impetuses of economic growth and development, which are spatially rather differentiated phenomena can be found within wider social fabric. Not surprisingly, institutionalism that concentrates on socioeconomics becomes quite frequented source of inspiration for regional studies. The article shows the institutionalism from evolutionary perspective and reveals its appropriateness in the field of regional growth and development. It is argued that some traditional regional conceptions applied numerous elements of institutional economics and recent years witnessed a distinct growth of interest in institutionalism in the sphere of regional analyses. Institutional elements are currently an indispensable part of many regional studies just for the sake of their practical orientation.
