The paper deals with an evaluation of the European Union (EU) competitiveness at regional level by new multi-criteria approach of the EU. This approach is based on the EU Regional Competitiveness Index (RCI). The main purpose of this first composite indicator is evaluation of competitiveness for each of the EU NUTS 2 region. This Index is based on the existing assessment of competitiveness at the national level; it builds on and modifies the approach of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The aim of this paper is to introduce the theoretical and methodological basis of the RCI and its usage on the example of evaluating the competitiveness of NUTS 2 regions in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of the paper defines concept of the RCI and methodological background of its creation. The empirical part of the paper deals with the example of the Czech NUTS 2 region competitiveness evaluation.
