Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet where it is usual to have data stored in worksheet cells. Nevertheless, in many cases it is more efficient not to have the data stored directly in the workbook sheets or to process them there, but to move them to the operating memory for their processing. These options are provided by the Power Pivot add-in within Excel, but application developers in Excel can also use the Visual Basic for Applications programming language. This article should not only show ways how to process data in Excel in-memory, but should also demonstrate the benefits of in-memory data processing by comparing the performance of data stored in sheet cells and in-memory.
