An identification of nitrogen-containing organic compounds in coke-plant wastewaters and their contribution to an inhibition of wastewater treatment processes was evaluated. The coke plant wastewaters are complex mixtures of various inorganic and organiccompounds that can have negative effects on the wastewater treatment. The nitrogenous organic compounds are removed from wastewaters through process of nitrification and denitrification. Both of these processes can be inhibited by various factors, amongthem the occurence of some nitrogenous organic compounds can be important. The analytical determination was performed by GC/MS. Many organic compounds (phenols, methyl and dimethylphenols, PAHs, quinolines etc.) were identified in the samples. Mostly ofthem are known as inhibitors of the nitrification process in wastewater treatment. That could lead to an insufficient removal of nitrogenous compounds form wastewaters during the wastewater treatment and contribute to undesirable increas
