Phosphates increase the amount of nutrients and growth of algae and cyanobacteria. This process causes eutrophication of water and complicates the treatment of water for drinking water. There are numerous methods of removal of phosphorus from wastewater.Some of those are used an industrial scale, others only in laboratory conditions and exist only as theoretical studies. Most phosphates are removed as insoluble salts. The processes using adsorbents, ion exchange, electrocoagulation, etc are not exception. The literature pays attention to the use of natural clay minerals (bentonites and montmorillonites), which for the removal of phosphates were modified. Modification of clay minerals is performed by using organic and anorganic ions. Sorption of orthophosphate has been described in literature.
