Platinum group metals from autocatalysts in soils of Ostrava city, Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Autocatalysts, which are installed into automobiles to reduce the production of gaseous pollutants originating during the fuel combustion and thus contribute enormously to environmental protection, are considered the main source of platinum group metals(PGM) emissions into the environment. Since their introduction, the significant increase of PGM concentrations in different environmental compartments has been observed. This, together with the information about toxicity of Pt, Pd and Rh, raises concernsabout possible health risks. To obtain input data for the assessment of potential exposure to PGM, screening of Pt, Pd and Rh in soils was realized in the city of Ostrava, situated in Northern Moravia, Czech Republic, at locations with different trafficloads, including sites with potential exposure of children. Nickel sulphide fire assay technique was applied to the preconcentration of PGM. The analyses were performed by ICP-MS. Concentrations of Pt, Pd and Rh in soils of Ostrava city
