Biological pretreatment of two different digestates with Pleurotus ostreatus was conducted to investigate the potential of fungal strain to implement any unexploited organic matter in the spent anaerobic digestion effluent in methane recovery. The capability of fungus to selectively remove lignin during the rotting process was dependent on the pristine material used as feedstock for generation of digestate. P. ostreatus promoted biogas generation for all pretreatment conditions. Modification of a commercial sludge by P. ostreatus for 20 days enhanced the biogas and methane generation from digestate by 71.4 %. Methane release provided by the sludge pretreated for 30 days (0.214 m3kgVS-1) was slightly higher than that provided by the digestate pretreated for 20 days (0.204 m3kgVS-1). Methane yields were strongly dependent on the origin of digestate. Corn silage-derived sludge showed a smaller increase of 46.2 % in methane yield with pretreatment than the commercial digestate.
