Xylene adsorbents produced by microwave pyrolysis of various types of waste

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The management of waste materials, particularly polymers, biomass and animal by-products, is a critical environmental issue. Microwave pyrolysis has emerged as a promising thermochemical process for converting these wastes into valuable carbonaceous adsorbents. Compared to conventional pyrolysis, microwave pyrolysis offers several advantages including improved process control, energy efficiency and overall cost effectiveness. Carbonaceous materials obtained by microwave pyrolysis, such as pyrolytic carbon black and chemically activated pyrolytic carbon black, exhibit high adsorption capacities for both non-polar and polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gaseous streams. The physicochemical properties of these adsorbents are significantly influenced by the type of feedstock, microwave power, retention time and the presence or absence of activating agents. This study investigates the adsorption characteristics of carbons prepared from various waste materials, including scrap tyres, corn cobs and waste animal bones, with and without chemical activation (e.g. ZnCl2, K2CO3, KOH, NaOH). A comprehensive characterization of their textural, chemical and surface properties has been carried out. In addition, the adsorption performance for gas phase xylene has been evaluated to determine the key factors influencing the carbon adsorption capacity.
