Implication of sewage sludge use for sustainable soil management: Soil health and carbon sequestration under the EU ‘Soil Deal for Europe’
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Soil health is essential for sustainable development and climate change mitigation. In the context of the European “Soil Deal for Europe” mission, which aims to protect and restore soils by 2050, the growing need for responsible sewage sludge management is widely felt. This article reviews the latest achievements and challenges related to the generation, processing, and utilization of sewage sludge in agriculture with a focus on nutrient recovery and conversion into value-added materials, such as biochar and construction materials. Direct use of sewage sludge (SS) for nutrient recovery is on the decline due to its pollutant content. Thus, several procedures were developed to recover phosphorus (P) from water, sludge, and sewage sludge ash with P recovery rates ranging from 30 to 99 %. The impact of fertilization and soil revitalization using sewage sludge on soil health, crop productivity, and carbon sequestration as a climate change mitigation strategy is analyzed. Advanced sewage sludge processing technologies, considering their efficiency, connection with the circular economic concept, and potential environmental and health risks are also discussed. Soil carbon sequestration (SCS) plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by storing carbon in soil and reducing CO2 emissions. Practices such as sustainable agriculture, land restoration, and enhancing soil microbial activity can significantly improve SCS, supporting climate neutrality and ecosystem resilience. The results of life cycle assessment (LCA) and an evaluation of sustainable sewage sludge management prospects are presented. We highlighted the growing importance of innovative solutions and policies that support the use of sewage sludge in Europe’s efforts to protect and restore soils. Future research directions, legislative actions, and practical recommendations are proposed, which can foster the sustainable soil and sewage sludge management to fulfill the objectives of the “Soil Deal for Europe.”
