Retracted pronunciation of trilled r is a common speech defect. The phonetic identity of this substitution is not clear. Speech pathologists describe it as a velar trill, an articulatory type unattested in "normal" languages. The question is raised whether the descriptionn is adequate and, if so, whether a natural phonological process can be restricted to speech pathology. Velar trilling is interpreted as a way of resolving the need to strenghten periodicity with the need to simplify articulatory complexity of the trill.
