Why Is Alien So Alien? The Ethnic Other in Harry Crews and Lewis Nordan
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The essay compares approaches of two contemporary Southern writers ? Harry Crews and Lewis Nordan ? to the issue of ethnicity. Crews's characters, mostly lower- and middle-class, are often prejudiced against people from different regions or countries andof different religious faiths, habits, and life values. Athletes develop hatred toward weak intellectuals (in A Feast of Snakes), middle-class WASPs against Asian, Cuban, and Central European immigrants (in The Gypsy's Curse or in Body), or just anybodywho speaks English with a foreign accent (in The Knockout Artist), and even though African Americans are not seen as foreign, they are often treated as inferior. The paradox of such an approach is depicted in Nordan's Music of the Swamp, and Wolf Whistle, a comic novel based on a historical event, the notorious murder of Emmett Till in 1955, as well as in his memoir Boy with Loaded Gun.
