Ignatius Sichelbarth (1708 - 1780), a missionary and court painter in Beijing, arrived there in 1745 to assist Giuseppe Castiglione. Sichelbarth continued his mode of painting, and despite a lesser artistic capability, was granted comparable honors by the emperor. No letters written by Sichelbarth are known, and he remains an obscure figure, whose life is scarcely documented. The article traces the works made by, or attributed to Sichelbarth, from the Palace Museums, and the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin. It supplies the historic background, and finally raises some questions concerning the relation of art, the emperor, and the state in the eighteenth century China.
