The current study offers an interpretation of N. V. Gogol's short story "The Nose" highlighting the idea that the text is not conceived as a straightforward reconstruction of the event, but as retelling the retold story. Thus, the form of retelling becomes the story's unifying force bringing the text closer, in particular, to the forms of oral genres. Special significance in the narrator's style is attached to visual mimic gestures and expressions typical of a stage. Paraphrasing the genre of 'talk' ('slukh' in Russian) brings into the text an unrestrained spontaneous stream of various structural elements, opening up the short story's structure to include ambivalent meanings. Here, various and contradictory meanings, fantastic absurdity and everyday routine, comic hyperbole and tragic horror, grotesque laughter and parody on the previous literary forms co-exist casting new light through and on each other.
