Southern (Un)Popularities
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
(Un)Popularity always depends on reception. Myths and idealizations of the South did contribute to its popularity, but terrible events, despicable practices, and unjust stereotypes did an even better job. Southern writers may write about the Souths theyare familiar with, but, to be recognized, they are pressed to step out of their regions. E. A. Poe, W. Faulkner, F. Chappell, H. Crews, and R. Ford became popular in Europe long before winning their reputations at home. The author also touches the problem of the South that is "full of fakes," as Scott Romine calls it. Many scholars even challenge the very existence of a contemporary South; as early as in 1980, Lewis Simpson wrote about "post-southern America." The handy tool for the rendering of this "post-southern South" is genre literature: popular genres such as horror, crime novel, or fantasy are used to point out at various unpopular aspects of the contemporary southern life.
