The Role of Terms in Text: Investigating Terms from the Textual Perspective

Terms play a crucial role in professional communication - they are the vehicles for transferring precise meanings and spreading knowledge. Terminologists have identified several requirements which support informative function of texts and textual coherence, i.e. the logical meaningfulness of the text. Nevertheless, there are specific text types, e.g. argumentative texts, in which their authors do not follow these principles so strictly in order to achieve their aims such as to persuade the readers, appeal to them, educate them, or amuse them. The paper presents these observations and documents them on several text samples trying to assess the criteria behind lexical choices with respect to terms. These observations are also intended to gain further insight into the functions of terms in communication and perhaps to broaden the understanding of the nature of terms.
