Le développement des biotechnologies contemporaines nous contraint a poser des questions philosophiques fondamentales. Il s'av?re en effet possible de changer les facultés physiques et psychiques de l'homme - m?me avant sa naissance - il est possible demanipuler notre héritage biologique. En vertu de quelles qualités est défini l'humanité ? L'homme est-il humain grâce a son substratum biologique, son corps, ses g?nes ou bien plutôt grâce aux valeurs qu'il accepte et en vertu desquelles il compte diriger sa vie ? Et si quelques-unes de ces valeurs sont en contradiction avec le conditionnement biologique de la vie humaine ? Faut-il renoncer a elles ou bien au contraire tenter une thérapie des maux biologiques, la principale infirmité humaine ? O? chercher les principes qui légitimeraient la restriction autoritaire de la demande individuelle toujours plus croissante pour les manipulations de son propre corps, pour l'intervention dans le ? naturel des choses ? ? Are we free to transform ourselves? Free will a condition of moral conduct is. This phenomenon is one of the key features of humanity. A well-founded belief in free will is also a condition which makes the functioning of a democratic society and a legalstate possible. If we are really free, there are an endless range of possibilities which we can essentially achieve. We are free to postulate ideals and try to fulfi l them. We are aware, however, of the fact that human beings are sometimes cruelly limited in terms of their desires. Nature often limits and restrains humans. Philosophers have concluded that man is only free in thought. In the 21st century we are fi nally beginning to realize that we can do much more than morely think correctly. Science with its biotechnologies provides us a powerful weapon against erstwhile necessity. We do not have to succumb to such an extent to the oftentimes inhuman laws of nature. We can worn at changing them ... and perhaps even change ourselves. S
