Legacy of Chinese traditional linguistics in The Dictionary of Cognates

The Dictionary of Cognates is a key to etymological studies in Chinese linguistics, which categorizes classical Chinese words into groups in accordance to their common word-stem. In Chinese linguistics, there is the idea that quantification of the vocabulary is reason of phonological and semantic metamorphoses on the word-stem. Thus, reflecting the words homophony and synonymy from perspectives of Chinese traditional historical phonology and lexicology an influential Chinese linguist Wang Li (1900-1986)hierarchized vocabulary of ancient Chinese by the dictionary. Obviously, it is very inspiring to search for the origin of Wang Li's unique cognates theory. Its roots go back to pre-Qin time, into classic works of Chinese Confucianism, Taoism, Legalism,Mohism as well as Nominalism. These schools of philosophical thought showed interest in general definition of the word particularly.
