Within a wider discussion concerning the realtion between morphology and syntax, the author argues for a uniform theory of the laguage systém including the rules for the position of the head of the phrase and of the word. He demonstrates the principles for English and French, mentioning other languages, too. He shows how the head is realised and which propeties are typiclal for heads on the level of phonetics, including the optionality of overt realisation.
