The article is devoted to the perception of the deposition of Patriarch Nikon in the foreign sources and its transformation in time. The aim of the article is to illustrate the shift in the perception of the event from a political incident to the issue of cultural changes. The foreign accounts then prove that the role of the patriarch started losing its political weight, which finally led to the abolishment of the Russian Patriarchate and the establishment of the Holy Synod in the beginning of the eighteenth century. The foreign accounts are treated as a valuable source of information, which, however, need to be 'deciphered' in order to avoid misinterpretation.
