Der Absatz hat in der Sprachtheorie nur relativ wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. In diesem Beitrag soll den Gründen für die Marginalisierung dieser schriftsprachlichen Einheit nachgegangen werden. Zu diesem Zweck wird der Absatz zunächst im Kontext 'benachbarter? Einheiten (Text, Satz, Periode) betrachtet. Danach werden einschlägige Beiträge gesichtet, und zwar sowohl ältere und neuere Absatzcharakterisierungen aus dem deutschen Sprachraum als auch Beiträge aus anderen Sprachkulturen. Anschließend wird die linguistische Relevanz dieser Einheit diskutiert. Hierbei wird unter anderem demonstriert, dass viele Beiträge zur Absatztheorie der traditionell-rhetorischen Konzeption der Periode nahe stehen, so dass es sich empfiehlt, diese beiden Konzeptionen im Zusammenhang zu betrachten.

The paragraph has gained only little interest in the theory of language. This article examines the reasons for the neglect of this unit of written language. For this purpose, the paragraph is regarded within the context of 'related' units (text, sentence, period). This is followed by a presentation of older and recent contributions to paragraph theory from German language theory but also from other language cultures. After that follows a discussion of the linguistic relevance of the paragraph. It turnsout that many contributions to the theory of the paragraph have strong affinities with the conception of the period. Therefore, it is advisable to view these conceptions in correlation.
