The study analyses the situation of the Crimean Tatars before and after the Russian annexation of 2014. The Tatars are understood as a distinctive society in terms of societal security analytical framework. The analysis first provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the Crimean Tatars as a nation, focusing on the issues of identity, nationalism, and cultural as well as ethnic threats. The second part analyses the contemporary threats to Crimean Tatar identity under the new pro-Russian authorities in Crimea, within the theoretical framework of societal security, and explains the non- violent nature of Crimean Tatar resistance.
