Towards the Everyday Life of Jews and Christians as Presented in the so-called Kenaanic Glosses

Medieval Czech language material preserved in Hebrew manuscripts shows that Czech was a language shared by Jews and Christians in the Czech lands, which were part of the medieval Ashkenaz, from the beginning of the Jewish settlement up to the 13./14. century. Traces of this vernacular, mostly separate words, "glosses", written in Hebrew characters by prominent Jewish scholars allow us to peer into the daily lives in medieval towns and bear evidence of its shared as well as distinct areas. Glosses connected to the commentary of the tractate Avodah zarah, coming from the 13th century halachic compendium Or Zarua by Isaac ben Moses, were chosen to illustrate two areas of the shared space Czech Jews and Christians: medical treatment and wine production.
