In 1830 the new theatre building was opened in the Olomouc Upper square. The stable theatre live enriched enormously culture live of the city and encouraged development of publishing activities in both ways – music journalism and publishing houses. The public debates on artistic value of theatre performances, on abalities of particular artists etc. gained new quality after the October diploma 1860 because Czechs living in and around the traditional German city put pressure on theatre directors and demanded Czech plays on the stage. Czech national movement was getting richer during 1870s and arouse competitive and unfriendly reactions on German side. The arguments for refusal of Smetana´s and Tchaikovsky´s operas by directors of Olomouc theatres are discussed with the support of source research of documents from acts of local goverments as well as periodicals.
