Mapping the Success: Inter-municipal Cooperation in Two Czech Micro-regions

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In our case study, we introduce two successful microregions in the Czech Republic. Both have a history of more than 15 years of thriving cooperation among its members. Both microregions are well organized and structured, operating in various fields. Since their establishment they have been effective in obtaining EU and government funds resulting in greater regional development. In addition to that, unlike other microregions, they have also focused on building a community of citizens. They were chosen for several specific reasons. The first microregion is located in the former Sudeten lands which experienced the deportation of Germans after the Second World War and the communist government led repopulation of those areas. This meant that the cultural, social and identity tradition was interrupted, which resulted in lower civic participation, higher unemployment, lower educational level and higher criminal rate. This former region faces social and economic deprivation. It is regarded as a peripheral region in the Czech Republic. Such a structural condition is not favourable for inter-municipal cooperation, yet the presented microregion “Svazek obcí Údolí Desné” is regarded as a well-functioning inter-municipal cooperation and serves as an illustration of unexpected successes. The second microregion is in the central Morava region. The Microregion Moštěnka is distinctive because it is not only good in various forms of inter-municipal cooperation, but because it provides educational and expertize activities to another IMCs in the Czech Republic.
