Nothing Can Replace Memory: The Poetry of (non)belonging of Jean Binta Breeze
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The poetry by Jean Binta Breeze has been pioneering in many aspects: being recognized as the first female performer of dub poetry, Breeze ventured in other forms of poetry and prose in order to create literature that specifically addresses the issues of black female experience both in the Caribbean and in Britain. The paper will explore ethnic and racial aspects in Breeze´s work. Special focus will be dedicated to the memory which mediates the various senses of representation of black women. The modes of representation both in the fictional world of literature will be compared and contrasted to the historical evidences pertinent to the topic. Given the fact that Breeze has experience with living both in Jamaica and in England, the paper will explore the theme of imaginary homelands, the technique of utilizing memory as a catarsis because Breeze proposes that "'neither England nor Africa / Could replace the history she’d given / All the stories she had told me / All the songs that she had sung'."
