L’œuvre Le Bal des voleurs, du dramaturge français Jean Anouilh, écrite en 1938 et publiée dans l’ensemble des « pièces roses » en 1942, occupe une place exceptionnelle dans l’univers théâtral de l’auteur, car il s’agit de sa seule comédie-ballet. Nous étudions dans cet article les différents aspects du rire et du comique anouilhiens présents dans la pièce à travers le comportement des personnages. Notre analyse thématique détaillée de l´œuvre se fonde sur plusieurs approches théoriques de la catégorie du comique, dont notamment la célèbre thèse d’Henri Bergson intitulée Le rire. Essai sur la signification du comique, parue en 1900. L’examen du texte du Bal des voleurs au moyen de la théorie bergsonienne révèle que le comique de la pièce de Jean Anouilh est basé sur les trois types de situations comiques définies par Bergson. Au cœur de ces situations, on peut identifier des principes de répétition, d’inversion et d’interconnexions mutuelles des situations. Si le comique de l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Jean Anouilh reste imprégné d’une dose de tragique et se définit comme un comique existentiel amer, on peut constater que la comédie-ballet Le Bal des voleurs est une exception. Néanmoins, même dans ce divertissement plaisant la gaieté anouilhienne porte aussi la trace légère d’une certaine mélancolie et tristesse devant le poids de l´existence.

The play Thieves&apos; Carnival by the French playwright Jean Anouilh, written in 1938 and published in the set of &quot;Pink Plays&quot; in 1942, occupies an exceptional place in the theatrical universe of the author, as it is his only comedic ballet. In our paper, we show the different aspects of Anouilh’s laughter and comic reflected by the behaviour of the characters featured in the play. In order to perform the detailed thematic analysis, we are following several theoretical approaches to the category of comedy including the famous thesis by Henri Bergson entitled Laughter. An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic published in 1900. The application of Bergson’s theory on the Thieves’ Carnival shows that Anouilh’s comic is based on three types of comic situations which were defined by Bergson. In the basis of these situations, it is possible to identify the principles of repetition, inversion and mutual interconnection of situations. Provided the comic present in the works of Anouilh as a whole is fused with the elements of tragic and is identified as an existential bitter comic, we can consider the comedy Thieves’ Carnival an exception. Nevertheless, Anouilh’s comedy bears traces of melancholy and sadness created by the heaviness of existence even in this pleasant distraction.
