Different Faces of the Unknown: The Media and the Semiotics of Fear
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The present chapter focuses on the semiotics of fear in the context of migration and current refugee crisis. The question it addresses is that of the role of semiotic resources, as they are used by the media, in generating fear of the unknown and thus potentially shaping public attitudes towards migrants. Selected media representations from two central European countries, namely the Czech Republic and Poland, known for their anti-refugee sentiment, will be discussed here in terms of their potential for crisis and threat construction. In particular, we will focus on the role of “myth”, along with its visual instantiations, and “recontextualization” in constructing the image of the dangerous Other and, as a result, constructing the situation of “axiological urgency”.
