Tim O’Brien’s work has been interpreted mainly as part of the body of Vietnam War literature, yet his novels also depict how a struggle to conform to the prevailing masculine norms affects the psyche of white middle-class men. O’Brien does not romanticize this struggle, zooming in instead on dead-end pursuits and serious mental problems of his male characters. This article discusses O’Brien’s The Nuclear Age, showing how the protagonist’s uncertainty about his masculinity translates into an erratic behavior that can be analyzed within the context of hysteria and anxiety disorders traditionally associated with women.
