The Shifting Popularity of the Final “ko” in Japanese Female Names
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
One of the most pronounced Japanese naming elements since the establishment of the modern system of naming in the Meiji period is the final "ko", meaning “child/girl”, in Japanese female names. After a rather steep increase in use during the first two decades of the last century, this three-mora structure pattern, consisting of two or three characters, the last one being "ko", remained prevalent in female names for more than fifty years. In the 1980s it experienced a similarly steep decline and almost ceased to appear for some time, but has seen a comeback in the last several years. This chapter traces the shifting popularity of this structure pattern over time and considers the reasons for both its increase and decline. The data analyzed includes a survey conducted between 2012 and 2014 examining parents’ motivation for selecting a particular name, annual lists of the most popular names, and names excerpted from various name lists accessible via the Internet.
