In der historischen Syntax wird älteren sprachtheoretischen Reflexionen oft nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Insbesondere der Einfluss der Rhetorik wird häufig nicht gewürdigt. In dieser Studie soll am Beispiel der afiniten Konstruktionen (Auxiliar-Ellipsen) im Deutschen demonstriert werden, dass dies ein problematisches Versäumnis ist, da es zu diesem Phänomen im rhetorischen Kontext interessante frühe Auseinandersetzungen gab, die bislang unbeachtet geblieben sind. Zudem wird gezeigt, dass eine Berücksichtigung des alten rhetorischen Sprachdenkens (v.a. der Perioden-Konzeption) dazu beitragen kann, die Genese afiniter Konstruktionen besser zu verstehen. Schließlich werden ältere Beurteilungen dieser Konstruktionen analysiert, um der Frage nachzugehen, welche Qualitäten diesen Ellipsen zugesprochen wurden – und warum sie sich trotz vieler Anfeindungen so lange behaupten konnten.

In historical syntax, little attention is paid to older language-theoretical reflections. In particular, the influence of rhetoric is often neglected. In this study, the example of the afinite constructions (ellipses of auxiliaries) in German is used to demonstrate that this neglect is problematic since there were interesting early debates on this phenomenon in the rhetorical context, which have been ignored so far. In addition, it is shown that taking into account the old rhetorical language thinking (in particular the conception of the period) can lead to a better understanding of the origin of afinite constructions. Finally, older evaluations of these constructions are analyzed in order to investigate which properties were attributed to these ellipses – and why they could survive so long despite many animosities.
